Steve Rogers is the leader of the fictional superhero team known as the Avengers. His character is a fan favorite over the years, and there is no surprise as to why one would choose Team Cap over Team Ironman, with the recent events that took place in the film Captain America Civil War.
The film no doubt brought an interesting question to the table. That is how do we keep superheroes accountable for their actions? From the film I really feel that both Cap and Ironman had their fair points for making the stand they did, but I’ll leave that topic of discussion for a different space.
The film to me, further elaborate Steve Roger’s role as a leader and seeing how he garnered support from even those who opposed him originally, really speaks out about his leadership qualities. This article may contain spoilers, minor and major, so do watch the films if you are not keen on any spoilers.
Here are some leadership trades we can learn from Captain Rogers.
1) Make the best of the situation
One of the best quality from a leader is one who can make the best out of their situation. Even before Steve Rogers was given the Super Soldier Serum that made him Captain America, he would always do what he can to stand up against injustice.
There was nothing too small or too big for him. If he knew something was wrong, he would stand against it. For example, in The First Avengers, we see Steve standing up to a bully in the cinema, who was being a nuisance to others. While others sat down and watched. He made a stand. The guy was twice his size but he had the guts to stand up to him.
Before he was ever Captain America, Steve Rogers was already a leader by making the best off the situations he was put in. He never allowed his shortcomings to be an excuse to not do his part.
2) Stay Humble
Humility is a leadership trade that we can learn from Steve Rogers as well. We can see how even after he became a super soldier, he stayed humble. One of my favorite scenes from the films that portrayed his humility is the morning run in the Winter Soldier. We see here that even though he has enhanced strength and speed as compared to everyone else, he still feels the need to work harder than anybody else.
Hard work as most people would tell you, is the thing that has kept many successful people humble throughout their lives.
3) Connecting with People
The ability to connect with others is an important trade for any leader to learn. We can see in the films how relatively easy it was for Steve to connect with most of the people he came into contact with. Dr Erskine who took Steve as his number one choice for the Super Soldier program, knew almost immediately that Rogers was a good man, from their brief interactions.
Another example I like from the Avengers is when he first met Bruce Banner. He immediately assured Banner that he only cared about Banner finding the Tesseract and not the Hulk. You can see how this trust built between the two when it was Steve who managed to calm Bruce down in the ever famous “We’re a time bomb” scene in the Avengers.
A leader can only lead his team if he knows how to build a strong personal connection with people. This is why people stay loyal to causes, and organizations. It is not just the ideas or flags themselves, but the connection they have within the team and those who lead.
4) Standing on your own
What a lot of people do not realize is that, the life of a leader is a lonely one. Steve Rogers, almost never got to celebrate any of his achievements. Straight after WW2 he was frozen for 70 years.
Only to wake up realizing, most of the people he loved are now either dead, old with Alzheimer, or brainwashed to be a mindless assassin. Steve Rogers did not have a glamorous life as Captain America.
When we look at leaders in real life such as Malcolm X, Bruce Lee, Nelson Mandela and those of similar stature, all led very lonely existence towards a certain extent. They spend most of their time developing themselves in the dark for the achievements they would have very little time to celebrate. The lonely road is a path every leader need to get familiar with.
5) Drop the ego. Check your Intention.
An ego, is a leader’s worst enemy when it comes to leading any team. Whatever team you are leading, you must realize that the cause is bigger than your self interest. This is why checking your intention constantly is crucial. For Steve Rogers, being a leader means that you serve the people.
One of the arguments on the Civil War film against team Cap is how he was selfish in protecting Bucky throughout the film. Forgetting that saving Bucky was also saving an innocent man. Saving an innocent man that would have caused him his home, position, and whatever wealth he had in the world.
At the end of the Civil War film, when Ironman said to him, “That shield doesn’t belong to you. You don’t deserve it. My father made that shield.”
Steve immediately dropped the shield. The shield that is not just a symbol of his identity but is a part of him. It represents all his past achievements during the war and the Avengers mission. But he is not in it for the glory. He is there only to serve for the greater good. In this scenario, he dropped the shield to ensure the argument among the Avengers doesn’t escalate beyond that it already has.
A leader is a servant above everything else. Therefore when one leads, they need to learn to let themselves go in the process.
