Keeping up to date with world events can be a bit of a downer. Poverty, genocide, corruption, and falsehood, seem to be widespread everywhere in the world.
In a world where the rich can evade taxes and children are commodities for war profiteering, it is understandable that we all feel a darkness creeping in on us. This darkness is the kind that can lead us to a state of feeling completely helpless.
But how should we respond to all the negativity that’s happening around us? How do we light our darkest hour? What chance will we have in fixing problems that are beyond our capacity to fix?
Hope. Having hope is the key out of a state of helplessness. Hope is not meant for us to ignore the realities that brought us to the mental state of helplessness rather it is the key for us to face them and proactively find solutions for them. Hopelessness is the greatest calamity that can befall us for it can render us to inaction.
The Prophet Muhammad S.A.W said: “Even if the end of time is upon you and you have a seedling in your hand, plant it!”
This is a good example of how we should continue to be hopeful even if the world is literally ending. To those of us who are in this world to build the soul instead of just our material wealth, we need to understand that every action we take is meant for where the soul will reside eternally.
In the world that wants us to feel helpless, having hope and taking action seems to be the last act of defiance.
So, take action! Help your neighbor take out the trash, volunteer at an orphanage, always tell the truth, build something that would benefit the world, smile to the people who makes eye contact. Every good deed is a light to the world. Now, go out there and light our darkest hour.
